Local Student’s Service Project Raises Funds for Hull Food Pantry
Liam, a sophomore at BC High, and resident of Hull is taking the initiative to address food insecurity through a community service project. Inspired by the pressing need to support local families facing hunger, Liam organized a fundraising initiative to benefit Aunt Dot’s Kitchen, the Hull food pantry, located at Wellspring.
“Before this service project, I donated several times to food-related charities like No Kid Hungry and the Boston Food Bank. I have also volunteered for several years to make meals with End Hunger NE through Saint Paul School, Hingham Catholic Collaborative, and Christ by the Sea Collaborative. I knew that Wellspring had a food pantry, and I wanted to focus my service project on addressing food insecurity in my local community,” said Liam. “This experience made me realize how many people are helped by Wellspring and how important it is to the community. I want to continue volunteering at Wellspring when my service project is over.”
During his service project, Liam assisted with various activities in Aunt Dot’s Kitchen. He helped with loading and unloading food deliveries, sorting through food donations, putting together food boxes to be delivered to clients, and even cooked in the commercial kitchen on site at Wellspring. Anne Stenfors, Wellspring’s Food Director, fully supported him through this project saying, “When we first sat down to discuss his sophomore service project, I suggested a food drive for Aunt Dot’s Kitchen. Liam took it and ran, surpassing anything I could have imagined. He’s an absolute delight.”
Liam raised $1,500 through a Virtual Food Drive using GoFundMe to purchase essential food items for Aunt Dot’s Kitchen and help sustain their operations in providing food assistance to individuals and families in need.
