K. Holly m. carter, ph.d
Dr. Carter is principal and founder of H.M. Carter, Consulting, LLC. Her recent consultant projects include Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) consultant for New Repertory Theatre, Watertown, MA and Schools for Children, Winchester, MA. She also serves on the Racial Justice Commission for the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts. She brings to these positions four decades of expertise in the areas of organizational development and DEI, intercultural communication, training and training of the trainer workshops, professional, program and leadership development, small business development, strategic planning, governance and board development, and, the design and management of projects for sustainable economic and community development domestically and internationally. Her consultant services have focused on building capacity in communities through the provision of the above services to Fortune 500 companies, small and medium-size businesses, community-based organizations, education institutions and social service agencies worldwide.
Dr. Carter is also Associate Professor Emerita, Northeastern University and has served as Adjunct faculty at Lesley University and Boston College Woods College for Leadership and Management Administration. She was a Research Fellow at the Fairbank East Asian Research Center, Harvard University for two decades. Her current teaching and research foci are Race and Racial Justice, DEI in the Workplace and Leadership Development for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) professionals and global sustainable development.
Dr. Carter’s extensive consultant expertise has been contracted to a range of domestic and global corporate, non-profit and educational institution clients including: The Intel Corporation, CISCO, Fleet Financial Group, State Street Bank Foundation, AT&T Foundation, Polaroid Corporation, The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation Foxwoods Enterprise, The State of New Jersey Social Service Agency, the United States Peace Corps Agency, the United States Department of State Foreign Service Training Institute, and The Boston Symphony Orchestra; the Brookline, Massachusetts Commission on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Community Relations, Washington State Univ., MIT, Bryant College, International Christian University, Tokyo, Harvard University Fairbank Center for East Asian Studies, Harvard University Medical School, American Councils for International Education, Lesley University, Ministry of Education Trinidad and Tobago, St. George’s Medical School, Grenada and Jamaica, Sharda University, New Delhi, India, Department of Education, Western Cape, South Africa and Central Districts and The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Johannesburg, South Africa where she designed the curriculum and trained the inaugural cohort of teachers for the Academy.
In addition to her academic and extensive consultant experience in organizational and leadership development, Dr. Carter served as Senior Policy Planning Officer for East Asia and the Pacific with the Policy Planning Staff for the Secretary of State at the U.S. Department of State during the Administration of President Jimmy Carter. She was amongst the highest ranking African American women in the Carter Presidential Administration and in the Department of State. She served as Chairperson of the East Asia Advisory Committee for former Senator Paul Tsongas during his tenure on the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee. She also served on President Bill Clinton’s Community Technology Initiative and has been a delegate to four major United Nations Conferences including Population: Cairo, Egypt; Women, Beijing, PRC; Race, Durban, South Africa; and Commission on the Status of Women, New York.
Dr. Carter is widely published including a book entitled: The Asian Dilemma in U.S. Foreign Policy: National Interest versus Strategic Planning and numerous book chapters, papers, and articles. She has been listed in Who’s Who Among Black Americans and is a member of three major honor societies. She has served and continues service on several national and not for profit boards. Currently, she is National Chair, Board of Directors of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Black Alumni Association (BAMIT).
Dr. Carter received her B.A. in Political Science from Boston University, M.S. in passing and Ph.D. in Political Science from Massachusetts Institute of Technology with concentrations in International Relations/Development, Psychology and Asian Studies.
